Description
Hymn for Palm Sunday or Easter Week, in English, set for 2 voices (Soprano/Alto - Soprano/Bass - Tenor/Bass) with accompaniment (Piano or Keyboard or Organ). The pdf contains 5 verses, full score and separate vocal part. The song was published in 1543 by Joseph Klug in a collection of Sacred Songs in Germany, the melody is based on a 6th century plainsong with text by Gregory the Great (560-604). The English translation is by Maurice F. Bell, 1862-1947. The hymn can be heard on Youtube in several renditions, and it is included in about 12 hymnals.

1. The glory of these forty days
We celebrate with songs of praise;
For Christ by whom all things were made,
Himself has fasted and has prayed.

2. Alone and fasting Moes saw
The loving God who gave the law;
And to Elijah, fasting, came
The steeds and chariots of flame.

3. So David trained his mystic sight,
Delivered from the lions' might;
And John the Bridegroom's friend, became
The herald of messiah's name.

4. Then grant us, lord, like them to be
Full oft in fast and prayer with thee;
Our spirits strengthen with thy grace,
And give us joy to see thy face.

5. O Father, Son, and Spirit blest,
To thee be every prayer addrest,
Who art in threefold Name adored,
From age to age, the only Lord

(plainsong 6th century tune - harmonized with piano or organ)
